Police in Kayunga District, Uganda are hunting for unknown assailants who waylaid a 34-year-old woman in Kayonza Town in Kayonza Sub-county last evening and hacked her to death for reasons detectives are yet to establish.
Beatrice Ajwang, the Kayunga district CID boss, identified the deceased as Nalongo Nabikolo.
She claimed Nabikolo was on her way home from her hardware store in Kayonza town around 8 p.m. when she was attacked on the road.
Passers-by discovered Nabikolo's body lying in a pool of blood.
Ajwang told local reporters that one of the motives they are looking into is a retaliation attack after residents told police that Nabikolo's husband was accused of using witchcraft to kill their colleagues.
"We have received unconfirmed reports that the act was done by residents as revenge against her for the act of witchcraft by her husband against locals," Ajwang said.
Her husband, Mande, allegedly fled the village after receiving death threats from residents accusing him of murdering one of their colleagues through witchcraft.
"This is all due to ignorance among our village people who still believe in witchcraft. Investigations are however ongoing but no arrests have so far been made," the CID boss said.
According to John Muramuzi, the Kayonza Sub-county chairman, several people in Bbaale County have had their property destroyed or killed on suspicion of witchcraft.
