The Ugandan police have announced that they have detained a 17-year-old student on suspicion of trafficking 170 teenagers.

According to the authorities, they detained the high school student on September 18 in central Uganda.

The police said the student allegedly held 170 young people at the residence of a 28-year-old woman while they awaited transportation to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, where the student had promised them work.

The Uganda Police Force, on the other hand, claimed on Tuesday that the trafficking plot was a fraud.

"Upon questioning, he [the student] revealed that he intended to use the cover of the Humble Company in Kenya to extort money from the victims.

"The job posting for waiters, waitresses, coffee parkers, and grocery attendants in Kenya was a hoax", a statement from the Uganda Police Force read.

98 of the victims reportedly paid the student 100,000 Ugandan shillings ($26; £21) each, according to the privately owned Daily Monitor newspaper in Uganda, while the remaining victims each paid 50,000 shillings.

A plea from the student has not yet been requested.
