The Environment Agency is issuing a stark warning as overflowing rivers, hitting record high levels, pose an imminent threat to more homes in the coming five days.

On Sunday morning, England faced 192 flood warnings and 207 flood alerts, with an additional warning in Wales at Tendy.

Despite a forecast of predominantly dry but cold weather, the agency anticipates severe consequences.

The gravity of the situation became evident as the River Trent surged to a record peak at the Torksey Lock gauge in Nottinghamshire, surpassing levels last seen in the year 2000.

The agency said buildings “will flood and there will be travel disruption”, and local groundwater flooding is also possible in the South of England, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Katharine Smith, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, expressed concern, stating, “The prolonged wet weather and intense rainfall have led to flooding impacts, and our thoughts are with all of those affected.”

This alarming situation unfolds in the aftermath of Storm Henk, which has already flooded 1,800 homes across the country this week.
