A 65-year-old woman named Martha Umenweke has been apprehended for allegedly causing injury to her 19-year-old house-help in Ezinifite, Aguata local government area of Anambra State.

The arrest followed a report by a whistleblower who witnessed the incident.

The victim, Chidiebere Otenyi from Nkanu, Enugu State, stated that she was accused by her employer of stealing N25,000.

Chidiebere, who was still experiencing pain at the time of her rescue, denied the accusation.

“I’ve lived with my madam for a year and four months but I have been severely punished at the slightest provocation, including being starved.

“I’m 19 years old, but still in primary 3 because she demoted me when I came,” she said.

It was gathered that David, an alibi to the suspect, tied up the victim’s hands and legs after receiving the beating.

In response to the incident, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, expressed her determination to take action against the suspect.

Obinabo, outraged by the severity of the act and the injuries inflicted on the victim, promised her justice.

"The perpetrator will not escape punishment for causing harm and pain to another person," she affirmed.

She confirmed that the case had been referred to the police for further investigation and prosecution at the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka.
