AXA Mansard was established in 1989 as a private limited liability company and is registered as a composite company with the National Insurance Commission of Nigeria (NAICOM). The company provides life and non-life insurance products and services to individuals and institutions across Nigeria. Additionally, it offers asset/investment management services and health management services through its wholly owned subsidiaries, AXA Mansard Investments Limited and AXA Mansard Health Limited, respectively.

From 2004 to 2015, AXA Mansard Insurance achieved significant growth, with its turnover increasing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 55%. In 2019, the company reported a net income of NGN 28.1 billion, marking a 31% increase over the previous year. Over the years, AXA Mansard has progressed from the 97th position out of 109 insurance companies in 2003 to being one of the top 4 out of 57 insurance companies in 2019.

The company engages in risk underwriting and related financial services, providing life and non-life insurance services, risk management, investment management, and financial advisory services. It operates through two main segments: Non-Life Business, covering the protection of customer assets and indemnification for damages, and Life Business, involving protection against the risk of premature death, disability, critical illness, and other accidents.

As a member of the AXA Group, a leading global insurer, AXA Mansard is part of a conglomerate with independently run businesses operating in compliance with the laws and regulations of various countries. The AXA Group serves 108 million clients in 57 countries, with a significant presence in Europe, North America, and the Asia Pacific, as well as operations in Central and South America, the Middle East, and Africa.

AXA Mansard was listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange in November 2009. In December 2014, it became a member of AXA following AXA's acquisition of Assur Holdings (AAH), the majority shareholders in the company. The company holds a B+ rating for Financial Strength and a bbb- rating for Issuer Credit Ratings from A.M. Best (2020). AXA Mansard is also certified as ISO 9001:2015 compliant by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for quality management systems.
