Election: Police arrest armed youths as INEC cancels poll in

Police in Kano have apprehended a group of youths armed with dangerous weapons, intending to disrupt the elections in Kunchi Local Government area of Kano State.

Simultaneously, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cancelled the Tsayawa| Kunkchi re-run due to the snatching of election materials.

Despite these disruptions, elections in 60 polling units across six local government areas and three constituencies proceeded peacefully.

However, law enforcement arrested hundreds of armed youths en route to Kunchi/Tsanyawa Local Government Areas, aiming to incite violence and instil fear.

In Tsanyawa local government area, some youths reportedly snatched ballot boxes during the exercise. Meanwhile, the rerun election for the Kano State House of Assembly commenced smoothly in Kura Local Government area, with voters actively participating.

Security personnel were present in all polling units where rerun elections were taking place. Halima Abdullahi, an electoral officer at Kurunsumau ward of Auzinawa Polling Unit, confirmed the proper functioning of the Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS).

Elections progressed smoothly in almost all polling units in Kura, with the timely arrival of election materials. In Garun Malam Local Government, voters turned out early, and reports from Rimin Gado and Tofa constituencies indicated peaceful proceedings.

Heavy security presence was observed in all polling units, with a significant voter turnout as citizens exercised their constitutional mandate.
