He attended Kent Primary School and then George Fischer Middle School for a year. He studied dance at Happy Feet Dance School in New York.

McLaughlin was also educated at the Harlem School of the Arts under Aubrey Lynch, the former producer of the Lion King movie.

The star got his first acting role as a child in the opera Lost in the Stars in Cooperstown, New York at the Glimmerglass Opera House.

His first lead role was as the character of Young Simba on Broadway for three years (2012 to 2015). He subsequently got guest-starring roles in TV series such as Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Unforgettable, Forever, and Shades of Blue.
