The star got his first acting role as a child in the opera Lost in the Stars in Cooperstown, New York at the Glimmerglass Opera House.

His first lead role was as the character of Young Simba on Broadway for three years (2012 to 2015). He subsequently got guest-starring roles in TV series such as Law and Order: Special Victims UnitUnforgettableForever, and Shades of Blue.

McLaughlin's breakout role came in 2016 with his portrayal of Lucas Sinclair in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. His performance earned him the BET Youngstars Award and an NACCP Image Award.

He made his feature film debut in 2020, starring alongside Idris Elba in Concrete Cowboy. The film garnered positive reviews and acclaim.
