Personal life

Murphy has two sons, Eric (born in 1989) with his ex-girlfriend Paulette McNeely and Christian (born in 1990) with his ex-girlfriend Tamara Hood.

He started a long-term romantic relationship with Nicole Mitchell after meeting her at an NAACP Image Awards ceremony in 1988.

They were together for almost two years before marrying on March 18, 1993, in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Murphy and Mitchell are the parents of five children: Bria, Myles, Shayne, Zola, and Bella. Mitchell filed for divorce in August 2005, citing "irreconcilable differences." The divorce was finalized on April 17, 2006.

The actor began dating former Spice Girl Melanie Brown after his divorce from Mitchell in 2006, and she became pregnant and claimed the child was Murphy's.

When asked about the pregnancy by RTL Boulevard in December 2006, Murphy told Dutch reporter Matthijs Kleyn, "I won't know whose child it is until the baby is born and a blood test is performed. Sir, you should not jump to conclusions." Brown had a baby girl, Angel Iris Murphy Brown, on Murphy's 46th birthday, April 3, 2007.

On June 22, 2007, Brown's representatives announced that a DNA test had confirmed Murphy's paternity.

Murphy married Tracey Edmonds, the former wife of Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds on January 1, 2008. In May 2016, Murphy had a daughter with model Paige Butcher, whom he has been dating since 2012 and in November 2018, Murphy and Butcher welcomed a son.

They were engaged to be married in September 2018. Their son's middle name honors Murphy's late brother, Charlie, who died from leukemia in 2017.

Education

He secretly skipped school, and his mother discovered this at the end of his senior year. He was required to attend summer school.

Career

Murphy was 15 years old when he first heard Richard Pryor's comedy album That Nigger's Crazy, which inspired him to pursue a career as a comedian.

He learned to play multiple characters as a child in imitation of his acting hero, Peter Sellers. Bill Cosby, Redd Foxx, Robin Williams, Muhammad Ali, Bruce Lee, and Charlie Chaplin also influenced him.

Murphy began his career on July 9, 1976, when he performed in a talent show at the Roosevelt Youth Center, impersonating singer Al Green as Green's song "Let's Stay Together" played. This led to work at other clubs within walking distance, followed by late-night jobs at locations requiring him to commute by train.

Murphy first gained national attention as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in the early 1980s, and he was credited with helping to revitalize the show.

From 1989 to 1994, critical acclaim for Murphy's films declined, reaching a nadir with the critically panned Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), a film Murphy would later denounce during an appearance on Inside the Actors Studio.

Box-office receipts fell in comparison to his previous films, though he did have box-office success with Another 48 Hours (1990) and Boomerang (1993).

Murphy co-starred in Brett Ratner's 2011 film Tower Heist, alongside Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, and Casey Affleck. He played a thief who joins a group of hardworking men who discover they are victims of a wealthy businessman's Ponzi scheme and plans to rob his high-rise residence.

In 2019, it was revealed that the actor would reprise the role of Akeem in a sequel to Coming to America. Titled Coming 2 America, the film also saw most of the original cast members return. It was released in 2021.
