Jordan worked as a child model for different companies and brands before making the decision to go into acting. His professional acting career was launched in 2009 when he appeared briefly in the TV series Cosby and The Sopranos.

His first main film role was in 2001 when he featured in Hardball opposite Keanu Reeves. He gained more attention in 2002 when he played the role of Wallace in the first season of HBO's The Wire.

He replaced Chadwick Boseman in March 2003, joining the cast of All My Children, portraying a troubled teenager. His breakthrough came in 2013 when he starred as shooting victim Oscar Grant in Fruitvale Station. His performance earned him critical acclaim.

In 2015, he portrayed the Marvel superhero Johnny Storm/Human Torch in Fantastic Four. The movie got mainly negative reviews and bombed at the box office.

Jordan rebounded with critical acclaim later in 2015 with his performance as Adonis Creed in Creed. His character was mentored by Sylvester Stallone's Rocky.

He was cast in a supporting role in Netflix's Raising Dion in October 2017 and played Eric Killmonger in the MCU film Black Panther (2018).

In 2018, he reprised the role of Adonis Creed in Creed II and voiced Julian Chase in the animated series Gen:Lock. He also portrayed attorney Bryan Stevenson in the legal drama Just Mercy (2019).

"Newark isn't a playground. I had friends that sold drugs, stole cars. Being African-American and driving a nicer car than cops thought I should gave me problems."

"I would love to play a psychopath. Oh man, that would be amazing."

"My mom has seen me die way too much. I gotta give her a break. Hopefully, moving forward, I'll make it through the third act."

Is a huge fan of Anime.

His middle name 'Bakari' is Swahili and means "of noble promise".

Is not related to Michael Jordan, the legendary basketball player. To avoid confusion, he inserted a middle initial in his name.
