After Andrews, the actor moved on to actress Nicole Beharie following their onscreen appearance in the film Shame (2011). He ended things with her and began dating actress Alicia Vikander in December 2014.

He attended Fossa National School and St. Brendan's College (both in Killarney) and moved to London to study at the Drama Centre London.

Fassbender dropped out of the Drama Centre to tour with the Oxford Stage Company to perform with them.

The actor got his first screen role in Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg's TV miniseries Band of Brothers (2001). He played Jonathan Harker in a radio series of Dracula produced by BBC Northern Ireland.

His first major role came when he was seen alongside the cast in the action film 300 (2007). He appeared as Burke in the western Jonah Hex (2010).

Fassbender portrayed the Marvel Comics mutant Magneto in the superhero film X-Men: First Class (2011) alongside James McAvoy. He would reprise the role in subsequent films.

He also had a starring role in Shame, playing a man struggling with sexual addiction. His performance got him critical acclaim. He was next seen in 12 Years a Slave (2013).

The actor played late Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs in the biopic Steve Jobs (2015) and took on the titular role in Macbeth (2015).
