Personal Life

Omawumi Megbele is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress of Itsekiri ethnicity who got popularly after emerging first runner-up at the West African Idol in 2007. She was born on April 13, 1982, to Chief Dr. Frank and Mrs. Aya Megbele.

Education

She had her primary education at Nana Primary School and her secondary education at the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School (CEDSS). After her secondary education, she obtained a degree in Law from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

Upon obtaining her law degree, Omawumi worked at her family’s law firm – O.S Megbele and Associates located in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. She also studied French at Alliance Francaise.

Career

Omawumi became popular when she participated in West African Idol, where she emerged as the first runner-up in 2007. After the competition, she started performing on stage with music stars like Phyno, Tubaba, P-Square, D’banj, Banky W, 9ice, Angelina Kidjo amongst others. She released her debut single 'In the Music' in September 2008

She launched her acting career in 2009 when she played a role at V-monologues. She subsequently went on to score a role in Olurumbi, a Yoruba indigenous folktale and musical. She made her screen debut in 2010 with the high-budget AMAA award-winning film, Inale. Omawumi also got a lead role in Funke Akindele’s ‘Return of Jenifa’. In 2013, she was featured alongside Majid Michael and Ice Prince in Yvonne Nelson’s House of Gold.
