Career

Johansson's first lead role was as Amanda, the younger sister of a pregnant teen in Manny & Lo (1996). Her performance garnered positive reviews and earned her a nomination for Best Lead Female.

She subsequently appeared in minor roles in Fall and Home Alone 3 before attracting major attention for her part in The Horse Whisperer (1998), directed by Robert Redford.

In 2005, she starred alongside Ewan McGregor in Michael Bay's sci-fi action The Island. Johansson made the transition from teen to adult roles in the 2013 movies Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

She was cast as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Iron Man and was trained in stunts and strength building for the part. She also dyed her hair red for the role.
