Scarlett Johansson was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. She dated her classmate Jack Antonoff from 2001 to 2002 and was romantically linked to Josh Hartnett for about two years. Their relationship ended in 2006.

She began another relationship with actor Ryan Reynolds in 2007. They got engaged in May 2008 and married that September. They split in December 2010 and divorced in July 2011.

Johansson moved on to Frenchman Romain Dauriac in November 2012. They became engaged the following September. Their daughter, Rose Dorothy Dauriac was born in 2014. They tied the nuptial knot in October that year and ended the marriage in mid-2016.

She started dating Saturday Night Live co-head writer and Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost in May 2017. They officially became engaged in May 2019 and married in October 2020.

The actress attended PS 41 (an elementary school in Greenwich Village, Manhattan). She later enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and also studied at the Professional Children's School (PCS), a private institution for the education of aspiring young actors in Manhattan.

Johansson's first lead role was as Amanda, the younger sister of a pregnant teen in Manny & Lo (1996). Her performance garnered positive reviews and earned her a nomination for Best Lead Female.

She subsequently appeared in minor roles in Fall and Home Alone 3 before attracting major attention for her part in The Horse Whisperer (1998), directed by Robert Redford.

In 2005, she starred alongside Ewan McGregor in Michael Bay's sci-fi action The Island. Johansson made the transition from teen to adult roles in the 2013 movies Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

She was cast as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Iron Man and was trained in stunts and strength building for the part. She also dyed her hair red for the role.

Her portrayal as Romanoff led to subsequent appearances in the MCU, establishing her as a bona fide action star and making her the highest-paid actress in the world in 2018 and 2019.
