Personal Life

Zack Snyder was born in Wisconsin, Connecticut. He married Denise Weber and after they split, met and started dating producer Deborah Johnson in 2002.

Snyder and Johnson got married on September 25, 2004, and the filmmaker has eight children (four of them adopted). In March 2017, his daughter Autumn committed suicide, prompting his departure from directing Justice League and Joss Whedon taking over.

Education

Snyder attended Camp Owatonna in Harrison, Maine during his childhood and studied painting for a year after high school at Heatherley School of Fine Art, England.

He also went to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, graduating with a BFA in Film in 1989.

Career

Snyder's first film Dawn of the Dead was released in 2004. His second 300 became a hit at the box office and his Warner Bros. movie Watchmen (2009) cemented his status as a director of repute in Hollywood.

He directed the animated adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and produced, co-wrote, and directed Sucker Punch, which was released in 2011.

The filmmaker was chosen to helm Warner Bros' reboot of DC's superhero Superman titled Man of Steel. Henry Cavill was cast as the comic character and upon release, the film got mixed reviews.

Snyder directed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the next film in the DC Extended Universe, and was in the middle of making Justice League when he had to leave after his daughter's suicide. He was replaced by Joss Whedon.

In January 2019, he announced that he was signed to direct the zombie heist thriller Army of the Dead for streaming platform Netflix. In May of the same year, it was revealed that his version of Justice League titled Zack Snyder's Justice League will be released on HBO Max in 2021.
