1.5m Candidates Sit For WASSCE Nationwide

The permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Arch Sonny Echono has disclosed that about 1.5 million candidates are currently writing the West African senior certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Echono made this known in Abuja on Monday.

While inspecting some schools in the Federal Capital territory (FCT) Abuja, he expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the examination.

 He stated that the exam is carried out in 19,000 center across the country.

He further added that the conduct has so far been peaceful and stress-free despite disruptions recorded in the south-East.

He stated that, “We are very pleased that all around the country, exams are going on peacefully. We have a total of over 19,000 exams centres across the country over 1.5miillion candidates registered for their exams and beside the disruptions we had on Sept 13th in the South-East where some of our candidates were stopped from doing the exams, it is a peaceful and stressful examination."

Echono further stated that the ministry is doing its best in curbing examination malpractice.

He said, “We are complying with all the standard and ethics required of an examination. We are pursuing very hard all the cases and incidents of malpractice, we have a very tolerant policy.

“We will punish both the institution, we arrest anybody involved and we will also ensure that credibility is restored in our system."
