12 Nollywood Celebrities Who Tested Positive For COVID-19

As everyday people deal with the effects of the deadly coronavirus causing the COVID-19 disease. It has caused chaos, disrupting the lives of everyone across class and status. The rate of infection is not abating. It has not spared the people who work hard to entertain and pass useful messages to the public too. Nollywood celebrities and musical entertainers have not been left out. The Nigerian movie industry recorded its first COVID 19 related death a few days ago. While many of the reports may have seemed far away and perhaps faceless, LAWRENCE AGBO brings it home with this article. He looks at the experience and reactions of some top Nollywood celebrities who have been infected by the virus. Reading their experience should help underline the reality of the disease and give everyone more reasons to continue taking safety measures seriously.   

 

1. Azadus (Musician)

Nigerian singer, Olalekan Fadeyi popularly known as Azadus, made waves in the early 2000s. He was one of the pioneers of the modern-day Nigerian music industry. He is well known for the hit song “You is the one”, he recounted his experience while battling with the Coronavirus.

He confirmed that he tested positive for the coronavirus and got admitted to one of the isolation centres in Lagos.

After testing negative twice, he was discharged on Thursday, June 17, 2020. Azadus took to his Instagram page to caution those who still do not believe that the coronavirus exists.

”Glory be to God, I just got discharged from the COVID-19 isolation center and I am free from the virus. Half bread is better than puff-puff, that Garri in your house is far better than the good meals you won't be able to eat at the hospital," Azadus said.

He advised everyone to always wash their hands, practice constant use of the facemask and to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 preventive measures.

2. Paul Okoye (Musician)

Paul Okoye popularly known as Rude Boy of the defunct P-Square music group tested positive for COVID-19 on June 5th, 2020. The singer confirmed the report on his Instagram page after he had received treatment for at least 10 days.

In his post on Instagram, Rude Boy used negative words to describe his anger over those who still think the coronavirus is false. He stated that the effect of the coronavirus is a bad experience as he describes the coronavirus as the worst sickness ever. He advised that everyone should stop feigning ignorance about the virus.

“Covid is REAL!!! I know as typical Nigerian or African is very hard to believe some will say “experience is the best teacher oh well, the experience and the teacher have visited me and they’ve been dealing with me for more than 10days now sh*t is not funny ….. worst sickness ever!!! …… y’all better be careful out there if you like to believe me if you like don’t believe me you can as well wait for your own experience by playing ignorance. Goodluck. God help us all.” Rude Boy said.

3. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

The 42-year-old Nollywood star, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, disclosed on Instagram that she was infected with COVID-19 and gave an update on her health on August 16, 2020.

“Hello all, I know most of you have been wondering where I’ve been. Well, I contracted COVID. I have been ill in isolation and now getting better. More details of this soon,” she wrote.

About a month ago, the actress revealed that her husband, a pilot, Mathew Ekeinde, had flown their two children in a private jet from the U.S. to Nigeria. According to her, they were stranded in the United States because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Omotola is the third Nigerian celebrity after singers Mr P of Psquare and Azadus.

4. Lola Omotayo Okoye (Peter Okoye's Wife)

Lola Omotayo-Okoye, the wife of Nigerian Music star, Peter Okoye, also narrated her experience with coronavirus. The mother-of-two described coronavirus as a horrible experience that she wouldn’t wish upon her worst enemy in a video she shared on Instagram on Wednesday.

She thanked families and friends that showed sympathy during the period she was infected with the coronavirus and assured them that the glory of God is upon her family as she promised to offer private prayers to all those who are still battling with the coronavirus.

She wrote “I want to thank my doctor, Dr Ayo who took good care of me, my family and staff. I want to thank everyone who reached out to us during this terrible Covid-19 experience. My dear friends and family, thank you so much for your love,"

“Your phone calls and prayers helped me and my family heal faster. The grace of God is upon my family and I am so grateful to God Almighty. My love and prayers are with those currently battling this disease, you are not alone," Lola said.

Also, she advised that people should load up vitamins in their homes stating that all hands must be on the deck to fight the coronavirus together.

“We will continue to pray for your healing. For those who lost loved ones, we pray for you too my heart bleeds for your loss. We need to keep our parents safe. Please encourage older people to stay home. Please stay home. Load up on your vitamins. Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin B, Zinc! Covid-19 is real! The healing is slow but hopefully, I will be 100% real soon. We need to beat this together. I love you all and I am so grateful to God for life." she added.

5. Peter Okoye (Musician)

Popular Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye, popularly called Mr P shocked millions of Nigerians when he revealed how his nuclear family tested positive to COVID and battled it for three weeks.

Mr P revealed in a video via his Instagram page on Saturday, June 27, 2020, that he was the one who first tested positive for the virus and kept it to himself.

”For the past three weeks, I have been ill and most people didn’t even know what was wrong with me. I kept it to myself. It has been three weeks of hell for me and my family," Peter said.

“The reason why I came out to say it is because I am going to encourage a lot of people concerning this whole social distancing, getting used to sanitize your hands, disinfecting your environment, wearing your face mask and all that has been advised by medical experts to prevent being infected with the coronavirus. It’s been hell for this family. in this house, not just me. Even two of my domestic staff," he said.

“After a week, my daughter caught the virus as well. It was sad that when she caught it, the doctor insisted that she has to be self-isolated in her own room but my wife did something very courageous. She said no.

 “I was sick and I was self-isolating in my guest room. I couldn’t even see my sick daughter and I was feeling so bad. I felt so bad because I felt that I am the one who actually brought the virus to the house. It was so bad that I had to be calling her on video, checking on her.

“The next day, my wife did something very courageous. She picked our daughter from her room, held her and took her to the master bedroom and she called me and she started crying. I asked her what happened and she said I cannot live this girl alone. I would rather be infected and be with her.

“Five or six days later, my daughter was pronounced negative. When she was pronounced negative, we knew it wasn’t going to end there. The next day, Lola became positive. It has been hell but we had a bad experience. “I just want to tell everybody that this COVID19 is real. Don’t take it for granted.

“I am happy to announce that my wife, myself, our daughter and two of our domestic staff all of us are now negative,” he said.

6. Chioma Avril Rowland( Davido’s girlfriend)

Nigerian music star, Davido, was the first to break the news about his partner, Chioma Avril Rowland’s, positive test for COVID-19.

The music star shared the news on Friday, March 27, 2020, via Instagram on, writing that he and 31 people on his team decided to get tested after returning back to Lagos from abroad. While he and the rest of his team received negative results, Rowland's test came back positive.

"Unfortunately, my fiancé's results came back positive while all 31 others tested have come back negative including our baby," Davido. wrote

He added that they both showed no systems, but would be self-isolating as a safety measure.

"We are however doing perfectly fine and she is even still yet to show any symptoms whatsoever. She is now being quarantined and I have also gone into full self-isolation for the minimum of 14 days," he added. "

"I want to use this opportunity to thank you all for your endless love and prayers in advance and to urge everyone to please stay at home as we control the spread of this virus! Together we can beat this!." He concluded.

7. Ify Okoye (Jude Okoye's Wife)

Former beauty queen Ify Okoye, the wife of Jude Okoye, former manager and elder brother of the now-defunct music duo P-Square, was placed on oxygen amid the battle with COVID-19.

Ify took to the Instagram story on Saturday as she shared a picture of herself attached to an oxygen tank with a brief post reading: “surviving COVID-19.”

She shared another clip of her “bestie” who paid her a visit but was unable to get close to her due to the novel disease.

Ify’s COVID-19 diagnosis came a few days after her husband recovered from the disease.

Her post came about two days after Paul Okoye, better known as Rudeboy, recovered from the disease after battling it for 11 days.

8. Ali Baba (Comedian)

Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, professionally known as Ali Baba, released a video on Instagram after his return from COIVID19 isolation center in Yaba, Lagos State where he spent his Christmas and New Year celebration.

While sharing the video on Instagram he sympathized with all those who have lost loved ones to the virus and also warned Nigerians about the second wave of Covid that has been reported to be deadlier than the first wave.

“COVID is real. And my sympathy goes to those who have lost loved ones within the period that this COVID has come to Nigeria. Now please be aware that the next wave of COVID is deadlier, this strain of COVID is deadlier than the one that had come before because it’s mutating.” Ali Baba said.

“Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a scam. I just came out of isolation. Several people died while I was there. Some of my close friends knew and they were very supportive.” He stated.

He strongly warns individuals to adhere to the COVID19 safety guidelines to avoid contracting the virus as he thanks Gbenga Adeyinka the first and others who supported him and his family during his stay at the isolation center.

9. Elvina Ibru (Actress)

Nollywood actress Elvina Ibru disclosed in a video she shared on her Instagram page that she tested positive for the dreaded novel-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and has been in isolation and taking her medications since she tested positive.

Without mincing words, Elvina has appealed to Nigerians to believe that the virus is real and take all the necessary precautions as it is been tough dealing with the disease.

In her words, she said: “I just want to tell all of you that walk around without face masks or hand sanitisers that coronavirus is real and am currently battling the virus.

she said she has been in her room all by herself, she cants hug her son, sisters brothers, or any of her family members saying anybody can contract the virus and its not something to be ashamed of or kept from the public as she encourages that the more people talk about it, the more those who refuse to believe know how serious it is and believe that it exists.

she described herself as being very lucky recounting her ordeal that about two days back she couldn't do anything because she was constantly coughing and she was in a bad state.

she explained that the virus could av gotten everywhere because she was very careful not to attend parties and avoided large gatherings yet she contacted the coronavirus.

10. Zainab Balogun (Actress)

Nollywood actress, Zainab Balogun has revealed in the latest edition of her vlog TheLifeWithZee where she disclosed that she contracted COVID-19 and didn’t find out early until things started getting intense.

"The end of 2020 was intense for me with so much happening offline but I thought to share one of the many updates coming with you all. Covid-19 is REAL with cases rising daily, do continue to mask up and stay safe! This is my story. Please watch." She said.

The actress revealed just how bad she was hit by the virus that it affected her business, work and nearly ruin Christmas and the New Year celebrations for her because she had to self-Isolate.

The actress in a brief description on her YouTube channel noted that the COVID-19 virus is real and not a hoax as peddled by some persons.

11. Jude Okoye (Musician)


Music label boss, Jude Okoye, had revealed that his younger brother, Paul Okoye, popularly referred to as Rudeboy infected him with COVID-19.

He explained that he did everything possible not to contact the coronavirus but he wasn’t successful and he advised that the virus is real and every individual should do their best not to contract the virus as he suspected that he contacted the virus from his brother Rude Boy who also was infected with the coronavirus.

“There is nothing I did not do in order not to contract the virus; I did social distancing, I stopped going out, I had hand sanitisers everywhere and I was wearing a face mask. But the fact that you have a cook that would go to the market and return, it takes just one person to bring it and pass it to the whole family. Just do your best because at the end of the day what will happen will happen.

“I believe I got the virus from Rudeboy because we normally sit together most times and he is the one that goes out for promotions. Somehow, I believe that I got it from him because I do not go out,” he said. 

12. The late Sotonye Green (Actress)

Nollywood actress Sotonye Green died on the 14th of January 2021 as a result of the deadly Coronavirus. She is the first person to be confirmed dead from complications of COVID-19 in the Nigerian movie industry.

The deceased's industry friend, Deborah King announced the death on Friday. King said Green died at Yaba Isolation Centre. She also ranted that Isolation Centre was responsible for killing the promising actress with its staff's ineptitude.

She announced the death on her Instagram page, describing the Yaba Isolation centre as a death trap for the poor where only the rich and famous get treated.

Late Sotonye was be buried on January 15, 2021. May her soul rest in peace, Amen.
