A 16-year-old accused of firing the shot that killed 12-year-old Melissa Ortega has been arrested this week.
Chicago Police Superintendent, David O. Brown said on Wednesday that the 16-year-old was firing at a group of gang members in the Little Village neighbourhood on Saturday.
Melissa was shot in the head by one of those rounds as she and her mother crossed the street.
The Superintendent said; "It is unacceptable that Melissa is the latest Chicagoan to fall victim to senseless, senseless gang violence."
The Police department said the 16-year-old was arrested on Tuesday and has been charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm in an occupied vehicle, and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.
Chicago has been a playground for gang activities. In 2021, there were 797 murders in Chicago, according to the Police Department.
