19 Nollywood Actors That Have Died In Past Few Months

Death, they say is inevitable as a part of the cycle of life. With nine months through 2020, many lives in the Nigerian entertainment industry have been lost due to one reason or the other, most especially through unknown sicknesses.

Many viewers have grown up knowing some veterans interpret roles perfectly as they play interesting characters in movies.

Sadly, none of the actors have died through a battle with COVID-19 that has been ravaging the world and Nigeria inclusive.

AllNews takes a look at a host of them who has lost their life through one battle or the other.

  1. Rasheed Abu

Earlier in April, the President of Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) Bolaji Amusan aka Mr Latin confirmed the death of Rasheed Abu, who died after he reportedly slumped.

Latin said he was informed that the actor had slumped, but was revived after which he gave up the ghost.

“Yes, he is dead. As the president of TAMPAN, I was reliably informed that he slumped, he was revived and unfortunately died on the way to the hospital.”

Also announcing the death of Abu, his friend and colleague in the industry, Yomi Gold shared of photo of him, with the caption “I just lost a dear friend. Death comes when we don’t expect. My prayers to your family and friends. Our moment together as friends will always be special to me. Live forever Abu.”

  1. Ukwak Asuquo

Also in April, veteran actor, Ukwak Asuquo, popularly known for his role as in the popular movie "The Village Headmaster Tv show" was pronounced dead.

The news of Asuquo's death was announced in a press release by actress and the Public Relations Officer of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Monalisa Coker.

The statement reads in part; “With deep sorrow and gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the demise of Mr. Uwak Auquo, popularly known as Boniface in the rested television drama series, The Village Headmaster.”

“Until his death, he was a card-carrying and financially update member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abuja Chapter.

"The national president of AGN, Emeka Rollas has set up a burial committee to collaborate with the family to give him a befitting burial.”

  1. Alkali Matt

On March 24, the Nollywood industry lost Alkali Matt, also known as Dareng, who died while filming on set.

Matt, known for his role in Africa Magic series “Halita” died in Keffi, Nassarawa, and the news of his death was announced on social media by Dimbo Atiya, founder of familiar grounds media who said he died at about 7 pm on the said date.

She wrote, ”Familiar Grounds Media would like to send our deepest condolences to the family of AKALI MATHEW who played the character of DARENG on the TV Series HALITA.

”He was one of our much-valued cast, who died on the 24th of March 2020.

”This extremely sad event took place suddenly while he was filming on another set for an Epic movie in a village near Keffi.

”This has come as a rude shock to us all and we pray that the Lord will grant his family the fortitude to bear this great loss.

  1. Juwon Awe

Awe was killed by a stray bullet from suspected Fulani herdsmen who attacked some motorists and vehicle along Ogbomosho Ilorin Expressway on January 26.

The incident that happened at Otte area of the expressway has left people doubting their safety in the country as reports claim that the herdsmen ran into the road shooting sporadically. Unfortunately, who was travelling along with other Nollywood actors, was hit.

The deceased was said to be a personal assistant to a popular Yoruba actress, Toyosi Adesanya who was also on the journey and was known for taking minor roles as well in Yoruba Nollywood movies

Aftermath of Juwon's death, the actress called for the attention of the federal government on the security of lives.

Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ajayi Okasanmi said that the incident involved some actors and actresses going to shoot a film at a location, adding that investigation had commenced on the incident towards arresting the perpetrators.

  1. Chizoba Boye

Veteran actress and filmmaker Chizoba Boye, who died on May 10, after a brief illness.

Chizoba Boye, is the wife of veteran filmmaker, Sam Boye, and she was a regular face on television series, ‘Tinsel.’

Aside from her role in Tinsel, she was also a producer and presenter. Her Igbo comedy series, ‘Ka Anyi Si Ebi, was a star feature on DSTV’s Igbo Channel.

It was the first Nigerian Igbo Series set in modern-day Lagos. She produced the drama series while her husband directed it.

  1. Toyosi Arigbabuwo

Arigbabuwo, died January 13, 2020, at his residence in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital after battling an undisclosed illness for six months.

He featured in Yoruba movies, including Ogborielemosho and Bashorun Gaa, Odun Baku.

The chairman of the Muslim Community in Apete-Awotan-Ayegun and environs, Abdulwaheed Amoo, confirmed his death and burial on January 14, 2020.

  1. Gbenga Ajumoko

Actor- cum- scriptwriter died on March 22 after battling with a chronic ailment. Reports said he was critically down in a hospital for six months in Sagamu Remo where he was diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension.

He solely treated the ailments quietly until things got worse for him. He was later transferred to a private hospital located at Ibadan Garage, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, where he died.

Ajumoko worked as a production manager, actor, writer, and movie director before he died. Some of his works include, known Enikeji (2017), Agbere (2017), Yeye Efun, Wound (2019), Ako Okuta (2018).

  1. Shafkat Adewoyin aka Madam Tinubu

Adewoyin, popularly known for her role as Madam Tinubu in ‘EFUNROYE TINUBU’, died in the early hours of Tuesday, June 23, and was buried by 4 pm the same day, according to Islamic rites.

Also known for role as Mama Oni Mama in Funke Akindele’s ‘ỌMỌ GHETTO’, the late actress embraced acting as early as childhood days and was a dancer.

She was a staff of the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, where she took part in many editions of the National Festival of Arts and Culture, NAFEST.

However, the cause of her death is unknown.

  1. Emilia Dike

A movie Director, Mr. Okechukwu Oku, on May 21, announced the death of the Dike on his Instagram handle, @okechukwuoku.

”Why is death taking the best people???? I’m confused oooo. Just filmed with Mama here on my 2 last projects, excited to release it and this horrible news today. A woman with a heart of gold, Aah noooo. I will miss you, Mrs. Dike. Nollywood has lost a gem in you. This is messed up" he said.

The late Emilia Dike had stared alongside other actors and actresses in movies like “Ignorant couples”, “Dust of yesterday”, “Kings Guard”, “Where Money Never Sleep 1 and 2”, and many more.

  1. Jennifer Omole

The actress and producer died on January 3, at the age of 33 and was buried at Villarejo de Salvanes, Madrid, Spain.

Her friend and colleague, Uche Ogbodo, confirmed her death in an Instagram post on Sunday.

Uche said the late actress Jennifer Omole and herself were core producers in a movie titled "Stolen Vows," which premiered in 2017 in different locations like UK, Spain, and Switzerland.

  1. Yekini Omobolanle aka Babalegba

Babalegba died in the early hours of Monday, September 7 died in his Abeokuta, Ogun state home, after a reported battle with an ailment.

The news of Babalegba’s demise was announced on Facebook by Emmanuel Adejumo, son of another veteran Nollywood actor, Baba Sala.

Adejumo wrote: “Alhaji Yekini Omobolanle popularly known as Babalegba died in the early hours of today (midnight precisely)… He joined Alawada Theatre Group in 1974 and was playing comic roles along with Baba Sala, sometimes he played Babalawo, a Police officer but the most time one comic role to another. He is a friend of the family and supporter of my Daddy till his death. He used to be called Sunday Omobolanle then before he went to Mecca and he turned Muslim. Personally, he contributed a lot to my success too.”

  1. Ogun Majek

Veteran actor born Gbolagade Akinpelu, died on the morning of Thursday, June 25 at his residence in Imalefalafia, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

Bolaji Amusan aka Mr Latin, the president Theater Arts and Motion Picture Producers Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) was said to have confirmed his death.

Before his death, one of his sons, Akinpelu Akeem Abidemi, sought financial assistance from the public for the actor who battled illness.

  1. Femi Oyewumi aka Laditi

Days after a Nollywood actress Emilia Dike died, the industry lost Laditi who stars in Yoruba movie.

In May, he was reportedly rushed to the hospital after a battle with chronic back pain for months.

A close friend to the deceased, Sayo Alagbe who confirmed his death wrote: “Ìtègùn Fó Omi Àgbè ‘Sòfò. Goodbye to Prince Fémi Oyèwùmí of Kòtò-Òrun Fame. The late Fémi Oyèwùmí during his lifetime was a down to earth thespian, film director, inimitable composer, and scriptwriter. May his soul rest in peace.”

Oyewumi who started his career as far back as ’80s has appeared in epic movies like Aye Toto, Koto Orun, Ija Eleye, and many more.

His last work is Ogunojalu Ogbomoso.

  1. Yomi Obileye

The veteran actor died in the early hours of Friday, April 24, after a battle with an undisclosed ailment.

The news of his death was announced by actor and comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka, who shared a photo of Obileye in a social media post.

“If tears could build a stairway and memories were a lane, we would walk right up to heaven and bring you back again. “

“Rest In Peace Uncle Yomi OBILEYE. Thanks for the memories. I can’t help but want to watch “HOSTAGES” again. Sleep well Egbon and May God give your family and fans the fortitude to bear the loss”

  1. Kayode Odumosu aka Pa Kasunmu

Pa Kasumu is died on Sunday, March 1, after a long battle with an ailment.

Nollywood actress, Foluke Daramola announced his death on her Instagram handle on Sunday.

She wrote: “Our model veteran actor Pa kasunmu Kayode Odumosu finally takes a bow.

“It is with so much heavy pain in our hearts that we regret to announce that our model actor Pa kasunmu has given up the ghost after a brief illness.

“The news was broken by a close source that stays around the hospital he gave up the ghost.

“We will keep you updated with further information on this.”

16. Frank Dallas

National President of AGN, Mr Emeja Rollas confirmed the death of Dallas who died on February 19 .

He died in a hotel in Abia State.

According to a statement signed by the Guild’s PRO, Monalisa Chinda-Coker, on behalf of the president, the body said: ‘With a heart full of sorrow, we announce the sudden death of the immediate past National PRO of GNU, Frank Dallas Ebulukwu.

“The National President of AGN, Ejezie Emeka Rollas has declared 3 days of national mourning and prayers across all State Chapters including FCT Abuja.”

“In view of this, all official activities of the Guild at all levels are hereby cancelled for three days.” State Chapter Chairmen are instructed to open a condolence register in his honour from Monday, 24/02/2020.

"Monthly meeting for February is dedicated to mourning and prayers. We shall be guided accordingly while we await further directives and burial arrangements from the family. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

17. Patience Oseni

Oseni who became popular for her role in the Nigerian Television series super story died on Monday, February 17, 2020, in Calabar, Cross River State.

This was confirmed by Augusta Akomolafe the late Patience Oseni's daughter, to the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ejezie Emeka Rollas.

Rollas said in a statement, “With deep sense of sorrow but with total submission to the will of Almighty God, we announce the passing unto eternal glory of Patience Oseni, veteran Actress and member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria".

Although, there are speculations linking the cause of her death to cancer.

The Ogun State-born actress started her acting career in 1995 when she first starred in the movie ‘Deadly Passion.’ She then rose to prominence in Nollywood back in the late 1990s with her role in the movie ‘End Of The Wicked.’

18. Jimmy Johnson

Johnson known for his character as ‘Okoro’ in the 80s TV series ‘The Village Headmaster’ died in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, at the age of 80.

He was said to have died at Garki Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness.

His death came barely three months after Ukwak Asuquo, popularly known for his role as Boniface in the popular show died.

The news of Asuquo's death was announced in a press release by actress and the Public Relations Officer of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Monalisa Coker on Wednesday.

The statement reads in part; “With deep sorrow and gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the demise of Mr. Uwak Auquo, popularly known as Boniface in the rested television drama series, The Village Headmaster.”

19. Musiliat Arikeusola

The actress also known as Osuntohun died on Friday, July 31, at the age of 67.

Osuntohun popularly known for her roles in "Koto Orun" was said to have died in her residence at Ijetu area, Osogbo, Osun state capital.

The news of her death was confirmed by Ademola Adedokun, the secretary of Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria in Osun State.

The veteran actress was said to have battled with an undisclosed ailment for some years.

Adedokun, in a statement, described late Osuntohun as a “passionate and committed actress who gave her best to the vocation.”

Osuntohun produced movies like ‘Omi Ipin,’ ‘Imi Esin’ and ‘Ogun Omo Iya le’, which Adedokun said was her last work.
