20 Prisoners Die In Shootout Between Police, Inmates In Mada

A shootout between the police and some inmates at a prison in Madagascar has led to the death of twenty prisoners according to the Ministry of Justice.

Prison guards were attacked by prisoners using rocks, snatching the guns of the guards as they made an attempt to escape the Farafangana prison.

Eighty-eight prisoners escaped the prison premises but 37 of the number were re-arrested after the police and military intervened.

During the intervention, 20 extra people were killed, while eight others were injured.

The justice ministry said that 31 inmates were still at large, as it pledged to increase security at all penitentiaries in the country.

Madagascar had a similar experience in 2016 when 40 prisoners broke free from the Toliary prison in the southern part of the country.
