200 Youths Upskilled By Lagos Council

No fewer than 200 youths have been empowered with vocational skills by the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Council of Lagos State in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

The Chairman of the council, Usman Hamzat, disclosed this at the graduation ceremony of the empowered youths on Thursday in Lagos.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the youths were trained in different vocational skills for six weeks.

Skills include hairdressing, photography, shoemaking and catering.

Hamzat stated that the initiative was part of the obligations of the council's administration to empower youths, women and the aged to build a greater local government, adding that it also intends to raise young entrepreneurs while observing their creativity.

The council chairman further said his administration would keep impacting positively in a bid to improve the untapped potential in the area.

He appreciated GIZ for working together with the council by not only empowering the youth but also equipping them with the needed tools to commence work after graduation.

Hamzat also thanked the officials of the council for their relentless effort in cooperating with GIZ to make the training a reality.

“This event involves over 200 beneficiaries who are also empowered with start-up equipment in different skills for self-reliance.

Reacting, Peik Bruhns, the Team Leader of SEDIN GIZ, said that the organisation was participating in promoting human capital development in Nigeria.

“Our vision is to enable thousands of Nigerian youths to acquire vocational training in mobile phone and laptop engineering.

“We also encourage employability and engender self-employment among the youth,” he said.
