2021 Budget: Senate Quizzes Lai Mohammed Over Controversial

The Nigerian Senate has raised eyebrows over a controversial project by the Ministry of Information led by Lai Mohammed which is fully funded by the Ministry of Finance in the 2020 fiscal year.

The project which is listed as the 'Completion of NTA Gashua sub-station ongoing’ had its allocation fully released to the ministry.

Speaking on the controversial project, Abdullahi Sankara, Chairman, Senate Committee on information, held that Mohammad had a lot of explaining to do with regards to the project.

Faulting the full release of the funds meant for the project, Sankara said it was wrong to release 100 percent fund without any work to show as evidence for the fund release.

Suspicions thickened after the project, which according to the minister, was sponsored by a lawmaker as his constituency project was found as part of the budget of the ministry of information.

The senators who were not satisfied with the explanations given by the minister while quizzing him, insisting that the project was not a constituency project.

Mohammed on Tuesday visited the National Assembly alongside top officials of his ministry to defend their 2021 budget estimates.
