2021 Grammys: Why Burna Boy's Win Sets Him Apart From Wizkid's

2021 Grammys: Why Burna Boy's Win Sets Him Apart From Wizkid

As Nigerians continue to celebrate the wins of two of the nation's music artists at the just-concluded Grammy Awards, it is important to note how Burna Boy's win sets him apart from that of Wizkid.

Wizkid ended up as a co-winner (alongside Beyonce) for Best Music Video for the song Brown Skin Girl and after missing out following his nomination last year, African Giant Burna Boy finally clinched the award for Best Global Music Album; a feat well-deserved considering his recent achievements in the music industry.

A lot of fans on social media have been sending congratulatory messages to the winning duo for their pace-setting accomplishment, but one clear fact that must be established is that Burna shouldn't be on the same pedestal as his colleague.

Wizkid

First off, Wizkid's win is a result of him being featured by another foreign artist. This is not to take away anything from him as we all know that he is one of the biggest names in music on the African continent.

But the fact remains that what influenced Wizzy's Grammy Award win is his collaboration with an equally phenomenal star, not his individual effort.

Burna Boy

Burna on the other hand, got the award for his Twice As Tall album all by himself. Yes, he featured other big names on it, but on the whole, it was all him. He didn't get the award because of those he featured. He nabbed it because of the creativity behind the album.

The video for Brown Skin Girl is not Wizkid's; it belongs to Beyonce who featured the Nigerian singer on the track. Those who saw the visuals can attest to the sheer genius behind it. That has nothing to do with Wizkid. He was only a guest artist who shares the glory of the award with Beyonce as he lent his vocals to the song.

Even the Grammy Award trophy was given to Beyonce and not Wizkid; a pointer to who actually owns it even if Wizzy also gets the credit.

So, when it comes to the Grammys, Wizkid can be on equal footing with Burna when he wins for his own music. Until then, fans might do well to remember that both of them being hailed as Grammy Award winners aren't the same thing.
