2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles Edge Past Guinea-Bissau In Return Fixture

2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles Edge Past Guinea-Bissau

The Super Eagles of Nigeria bounced back with a win against Guinea Bissau in the reverse fixture of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Jose Peseiro's men won the match by one goal to nil at the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau on Monday night to end their run of four consecutive games without a win.

Five changes were made to the starting lineup that lost 1-0 to the Wild Dogs in Abuja last Friday as Peseiro brought in Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, Moses Simon and Terem Moffi.

The Eagles produced a better showing than what was seen in the first leg and got rewarded with a penalty when Bright Osayi-Samuel was fouled in the box.

Simon stepped up to take the penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way as he stabbed the ball into the bottom right corner.

There were two good opportunities for the Eagles to extend their lead but Victor Osimhen's well executed strike hit the woodwork and substitute Joe Aribo's goal-bound strike was parried by goalkeeper Jonas Mendes.

Guinea Bissau equally had goalscoring opportunities but they were not clinical enough to convert their chances.

As things stand, the Eagles are at the summit of the Group A table with nine points and are well on course for qualification.

The Eagles next qualifying match will be against Sierra Leone in June before their final group fixture against Sao Tome and Principe in September.
