Presidential candidate and party members at the first signing of national peace accord
As activities begin in the electioneering process of the Nigerian democratic political system, President Muhammadu Buhari amongst other stakeholders has called for an issue-based campaign devoid of violence and attack.
Buhari made the call on Thursday at the first signing of the national peace accord by political parties and presidential candidates organised by the Kukah Centre, the Secretariat of the National Peace Committee in Collaboration with the European Union (EU), in Abuja.
He maintained that the forthcoming 2023 election is a call to serve, charging the aspirants not to overheat the polity.
He also reiterated his commitment to a peaceful and transparent election.
Buhari condemned the rate of fake news, especially on social media, stating: "This has continued to create havoc as misinformation poses a threat to our democracy."
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan added his voice, reiterating the call for campaigns centred on the interest of the Nigerian people.
"The commitment to a peaceful campaign for the electioneering process should resonate in the heart of all political parties and candidates", he said
On his part, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu admonished politicians to ensure a violent-free campaign as it constitutes part of activities to a credible election.
"With the electoral act, INEC will vigorously monitor campaign processes to ensure no violence as Section 95 subsection 12 makes it illegal for state apparatus to be used for the disadvantage or advantage of any political parties."
