As the 2023 elections draw closer, about 20 INEC Commissioners are set to vacate office in June and August respectively.

This was disclosed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger State, Professor Sam Egwu.

Egwu who spoke to journalists on Monday after the first stakeholders meeting at the commission's headquarters in Minna said by July and August, some of them must have concluded their tenure of a second term.

He stated that those who have concluded their second term would not be eligible for reappointment.

He added that there is the need to bring in new people on time to avoid disruption of elections preparations.

While attributing the country's political and electoral problems to abuse of trust by elected leaders and lack of organisation, he said building institutions to respond to the problems is key.

He stated that “After electing the officials, some of them will change their mobile numbers; voters no longer have access to them to lay their problems.

"The attitude of our elected leaders is the major factor responsible for voter apathy.

"Some voters, after trekking kilometres to vote ended up not getting benefits in return.

"Our political leaders must change their ways of doing things."

He further called on traditional institutions and other civil society groups to come together in educating the populace about their civic rights.
