The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decided to write to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali, for the arrest and prosecution of the Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
The commission made the decision after it suspended the REC, Barrister Hudu Yunusa Ari on Monday, following his unlawful declaration of Aishatu Dahiru Binani as the elected governor of Adamawa state.
Ari's action has raised tension in the state and criticism from individuals and groups in the country.
In a meeting on Tuesday, the commission decided to write for his arrest and prosecution and also called for action against his appointment.
This was made available in a statement today on the official verified Twitter handle of the commission.
“At its meeting today, 18th April 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:
“1. Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
“2. Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
“3. The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer,” the commission wrote on its Twitter handle.
