2023: Five Underdog Political Parties That Could Shake The General Elections

2023: Five Underdog Political Parties That Could Shake The G

Though the Supreme Court upheld the deregistration of twenty-two political parties on Friday, March 25 2022, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), five political parties have withstood the test of time and are ready to give the two dominant political parties in Nigeria a run for their money judging by a fact-finding mission embarked upon by AllNews Nigeria.

Below are the underdog parties set to shake things up in the 2023 general elections:

African Democratic Congress (ADC)

Take ADC for granted at your own risk. The party has been evolving and has kept its development profile low but steady.

It has become the shelter for aggrieved members of the two most prominent parties, the PDP and APC over the years.

Senator Monsurat Sumonu and Hon. Dapo Lam Adesina are a few of the big wigs who joined its train in the last four years in Oyo State.

Though the former has been expelled and the latter left for the APC, ADC is a strong political force in Nigeria.

Hon. Umar Abdulkadir Sarki is a member of the party representing Katagum federal constituency in Bauchi State.

Professor Pat Utomi ran under the platform of the party in 2007 and came 4th with 50,849 votes, the same position that the 2019 presidential candidate, Obadiah Mailafia polled in 2019 with over 97,000 votes out of seventy-three candidates.

The party today has Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh and Ralph Nwosu as some notable names.

Dumebi Kachikwu is the presidential flag bearer of the ADC while former presidential aspirant, Dr Mani Ahmad is his running mate.

The National Chairman of the party, Henry Okey Nwosu had also claimed that the ADC was only the third political party in the country that organised a national convention and presidential primary in the country.

All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA)

APGA won two seats in the house of representatives in 2003.

In 2011, Rochas Okorocha under the party defeated the incumbent government to become the executive governor of Imo State.

If you think the party's stead is waning, you should remember the sitting governor in Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo and seven house of representatives members.

Umeoji Michael, Chinedu Obidigwe, Ifeanyi Momah and Ezenwankwo Okwudili are some of the legislators from the party.

Orwase Herman, Onuh Blessing and Usman Shiddi are also lawmakers from the party at the ninth assembly representing different constituencies in Benue, Anambra and Taraba states.

For the presidency in 2023, Professor Peter Umeadi alongside Comrade Abdullahi Muhammed Koli is the candidate of the party to propel them to victory.

The presidential candidate was a Chief Justice in Anambra State from 2011 to 2019 and he is vying alongside the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Bauchi State between 1999 to 2002.

Social Democratic Party (SDP)

In 1993, the SDP was on the lips of voters across the country.

Chief MKO Abiola won the annulled election but the party has remained an underdog ever since though not annulled like its famous election triumph.

Adewole Adebayo, a legal practitioner and media CEO is the presidential candidate in 2023. He has been talking tough about the ills of the present government and legislators.

Just recently, the presidential candidate of the party alleged that the majority of lawmakers in the national assembly are vote buyers.

He also said he would put a lasting end to ASUU strikes if given a chance in the villa.

Chief Olu Falae further disclosed that the party has been rejuvenated to provide credible alternatives to remedy the failings of the two prominent Parties; the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressive Congress, banking on their history of election victories.

Prince Adewole Adebayo did not only choose someone who shares his ideology but his progression. He is running with Nafisa Mohammed Bolori, a legal practitioner from Borno State.

New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)

Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali is piloting a fast jet to grasp power come 2023. The party is a household name and is celebrating its 21st year of existence.

Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, a two-term governor of Kano state wants to be president under the platform of the party.

NNPP has built structures and zonal offices in Oyo, Lagos, Borno and Kano states in the last 24 months.

Abdullahi Iliyasu Yaryasa, (Tudun Wada constituency), Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, (Tofa/Rimin Gado Constituency), and Kabiru Yusuf Ismail (Madobi Constituency), members of the Kano State House of Assembly defected to the party from the APC while nine others earlier joined the party from the PDP.

Isyaku Ali Danja (Gezawa Constituency), Umar Musa Gama (Nassarawa Constituency), Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo (Ungogo Constituency), Lawan Hussain Chediyar ‘Yan Gurasa (Dala Constituency) and Tukur Muhammad (Fagge Constituency) are now card-carrying members of the party in the Kano State legislative chamber.

Also in the Kano assembly, Mu’azzam El-Yakub, Garba Shehu Fammar, Abubakar Uba Galadima, and Mudassir Ibrahim Zawaciki joined the party.

Bishop Isaac Idahosa is Governor Kwankwanso's running mate going into the 2023 election.

Labour Party (LP)

The Labour party has always been the party of the aggrieved, particularly in the southern part of the country.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko ran under the platform of the party and won the gubernatorial seat in Ondo State.

In truth, the party had struggled over the years to keep up with Governor Mimiko's milestone but it has a chance this time to "cook up a politically delicious meal".

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi flanked by renowned economist and former lawmaker (member of the senate & house of representatives), Yusuf Dati Baba Ahmed is the Sergeant leading the presidency charge in the party.

Some sections of voters are seeing the Labour Party as the credible alternative to the central government but every candidate is the winner of an election until the votes are cast.
