2023: INEC Considering Moving Sensitive Election Materials From CBN

2023: INEC Considering Moving Sensitive Election Materials F

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering alternatives for the storage of sensitive electoral materials other than the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The above update was given by INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu while answering a question on the political ambition and partisanship of CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele had recently filed a suit to enforce his right to contest in the 2023 presidential election without having to resign his current position.

On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari had included the CBN Governor among those he ordered to resign over their political ambitions.

Commenting on the issue, Yakubu disclosed that the commission may be forced to resort to an alternative arrangement for the storage of sensitive electoral materials.

"I understand the context in which the question is asked. But you should also understand the context in which events are unfolding.

"As we speak, our director, litigation, and prosecution is in court. There is a case in court. We have been invited to state our own side of the story. We usually refrain from talking about such issues because there is essentially subjudice.

"But we have already started talking about what alternatives are available to us in case we need to change the arrangement for the handling of sensitive materials.

"We are aware of the situation. We will watch the situation. We still have nine months before the next general elections. Things may be addressed before then", he said.

Speaking further, the INEC Chairman assured that the conduct of the forthcoming election would not jeopardised in any way.
