The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been ordered by the Federal High Court in Abuja to immediately resume the Continuous Voters Registration until 90 days before the 2023 general elections.
The order was given on Tuesday and while delivering judgement, Justice Inyang Ekwo instructed the electoral body to make sure that eligible citizens are not deprived of the opportunity to their voters card for the forthcoming poll.
Ekwo stated that it is the constitutional responsibility of the electoral umpire to make adequate provisions for the exercise in accordance with Nigerian laws.
“The case of the plaintiffs succeeds on merit", he declared.
INEC had been sued by Anajat Salmat and three others in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1343/2022, arguing argued that INEC cannot stop the CVR contrary to the stipulated provisions of the constitution.
The individuals also urged the court to order the electoral umpire to resume the exercise in accordance with the law of the country.
The electoral body previously disclosed that a total of 9.518 million new voters have been added to the existing 84 million voter register.
