The proposal by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) that political parties should conduct drug integrity tests as part of its screening for aspirants seeking offices in the 2023 general elections has been rejected by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).
The development came in a statement by the National Chairman of IPAC, Yabagi Sani, who described the proposal as “outrageous, outlandish, preposterous, despicable and a deliberate attack” on the sensibilities of democracy lovers in Nigeria.
"The awkward proposal portrays politicians as drug addicts who must be certified fit to run for various elective offices by the agency. It is reprehensible and unacceptable", Sani stated.
Speaking further, he demanded an apology from the NDLEA and advised the agency to desist from smearing the character and integrity of politicians, including those vying for the presidency, who he called "patriotic and highly respected."
