As the Independent Electoral Commission (NEC) raises the bar for the campaign process to begin for the 2023 general elections, the signing of the first peace accord took place on Thursday to curb violent activities and charge for an issue-based campaign.
The peace accord signing was organised by the Kukah Center in collaboration with the EU and the National Peace Committee and took place in Abuja.
Those present include the Labour Party presidential candidate and vice, Peter Obi, Yusuf Datti-Ahmed, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso of New Nigeria Peoples Party, Adewale Adebayo, Social Democratic Party, Omoyele Sowore of AAC.
The Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba, in his welcome address stated that it is incumbent for political parties to be mindful of the prohibitions as stipulated by INEC, as well as sensitise their supporters.
Baba noted that the Nigerian Police will not hesitate to carry out its duties to protect the lives of citizens at this crucial time of campaigning.
