2023 Presidency: Why G5 Governors May Be Confused

2023 Presidency: Why G5 Governors May Be Confused

The G5 Governors in Enugu

The wait for the anointed presidential candidate of the aggrieved G5 governors has reached a climax as the 2023 presidential election looms.

Nigerians expected them to name their preferred candidate in January, a crucial announcement they refused to make.

Though the G5 are only governors of Rivers, Oyo, Benue, Enugu, and Abia, they have loyalists, political friends, and personnel across the Niger making them look extremely politically influential.

One of the forces includes a former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, who had called out the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Governor Simon Lalong, over his claim that the G-5 governors led by Nyesom Wike were supporting the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The thought isn’t from the APC camp alone, most Nigerians feel the same way.

A closer look at some prominent aides of the Rivers State governor suggests that he is tilting towards the former Lagos governor.

Since he seems to be a leader of the group, it is on track to believing that his decision represents the collective thoughts of the generality of the group.

But reacting to the open secret, in a statement on Sunday, Jonah Jang stated that Nigerians no longer took anything coming from Lalong seriously.

The statement, which his Media Consultant signed, Clinton Garuba, said, “Obvious sign that Lalong is daydreaming is him thinking that the G5 PDP governors and allies, including former Governor Jang, are supporting Tinubu.

“They have repeatedly said that they do not have personal problems with Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, but with the process that brought him up.

“Yes, the integrity group has disagreements with the PDP and their withdrawal of support for Atiku’s campaign does not in any way suggest that they support the APC candidate. Only Lalong and his fellow dreamers think so.”

AllNews Nigeria reported that the aggrieved govs, Wike of Rivers State, Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo), have been at loggerheads with the PDP leadership over the zoning of the party’s high-ranking positions.

The disagreement has continued with all parties not finding a common ground.

But it is becoming apparent that the group is becoming confused and disestablished.

Though none of them has come out openly to endorse any of the presidential candidates Samuel Ortom has been partly obedient, recent events seem to suggest that Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde have been drawing towards Bola Tinubu.

Every political sense organ tends towards a yawning disagreement among the G5 gladiators.
