2023: We Won't Be Part Of Elections If CBN Extends Cash Policy Deadline — Political Parties

2023: We Won't Be Part Of Elections If CBN Extends Cash Poli

Thirteen political parties of the 18 in the country have threatened to withdraw for the forthcoming polls if the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) extends the deadline for the phasing out of the old naira notes.

The apex bank has been under pressure to do something as the deadline approaches, with Labour Party presidential flag bearer Peter Obi urging citizens to bear with CBN and the federal government.

CBN had caved in to demands earlier, shifting the initial deadline of January 31, 2023, to February 10, 2023, but Nigerians are still lamenting the hardship due to the scarcity of cash.

Speaking on the issue on Monday, the coalition of chairmen of the political parties lauded President Muhammadu Buhari over the naira redesign and stated that the new policy must stand.

Addressing journalists, the National Chairman of the Action Alliance, Kenneth Udeze, said: "We hereby announce that at least 13 out of the 18 political parties in Nigeria will not be interested in the 2023 general elections and indeed we shall withdraw our participation from the electoral process if this currency policy is suspended or cancelled or if the deadline is further shifted.”
