2024 Appropriation Bill: Senate To Include Dredging Of River

To address the recurring floods and their multifaceted effects, the Senate has decided to support the inclusion of the dredging of the River Benue and other river projects in the 2024 Appropriations Bill.

To reduce the possibility of an excessive flood from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, the lawmakers also encouraged President Bola Tinubu to expedite the building of dams, such as the Dasin Hausa Dam, which is planned to be located in the Fufore Local Government Area in Adamawa State.

They also encouraged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to start educating people about the risks of crossing rivers before or after rain and to give relief supplies to the flood victims.

These resolutions are being made in the context of the ongoing flooding brought on by floods and the undredged Benue River.

NEMA reports that in 2022 alone, more than 2.41 million people were displaced, more than 600 deaths were reported, and hectares of agricultural farmlands were swept away in the impacted states.

Reports claim that once the authorities in Cameroon opened the Lagdo Dam, flooding occurred in a few border states.

As a result, around 3.04 million Nigerian farmers were having difficulty repaying loans from the Central Bank of Nigeria's Anchor Borrowers' Programme totalling over N700 billion.

The National Emergency Management Agency claims that 13 frontline states were impacted by the dam's opening.
