The U.S. women's football national team defeated Germany 1-0 on Tuesday evening to book a place in the gold medal match of the Olympics.
The Americans required extra time to beat the Germans after it ended 0-0 at full time.
Sophia Smith scored the decisive goal in the 95th minute for the US side coached by former Chelsea womwn coach Emma Hayes.
The Americans are the most succesful women's side in the football tournament of the Olympics but Germany ensured they failed to break down their defence in regulation time.
"It means everything," Smith said afterward in a post match interview as quoted by ESPN.
"We had a tough year last year in every way possible, but I feel like this is a new year and we're really just showing the world that we didn't ever drop off."
The final on Saturday in Paris will be between the USA side and Brazil who overcame world champions, Spain.
