2026 World Cup qualifiers: Super Eagles recall delights Okoy

Nigerian and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has expressed delight upon his recall to the Super Eagles team, having been named by Finidi George in his 23-man squad to face South Africa and Benin in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Okoye's last invitation to the team was back in October 2023 for the Super Eagles' international friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique respectively but was inexplicably not fielded in any of the games.

This past season has seen improved performances from the 24-year-old with a couple of Man-of-the-Match displays notably the 1-1 draw against Juventus earlier in the year.

Okoye was in action in 22 games across all competitions and kept five clean sheets, his best statistics since the 2021/2022 season.

"I am very happy to return to the national team. It is a great honour for me and my family to play for Nigeria," Okoye told Udinese's official website.

Okoye's return to form has coincided with the poor game time of former number one, Francis Uzoho, who was in action for barely 20 minutes alone at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.
