A magistrates’ court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on Friday, sentenced 25-year-old Kazeem Salami to one year in prison for stealing food items valued at N1,000.

Magistrate V.B. Williams declared that the prosecution had convincingly proven its case, finding Salami guilty as charged.

Despite initially pleading not guilty at his arraignment, Salami was convicted.

The prosecutor, Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, informed the court that the crime took place on March 5 at 3:00 a.m. on Duroja Street in Ake village, near Laderin in Abeokuta.

Olu-Balogun explained that Salami's suspicious behavior was noted by local residents, who alerted community security officers. When questioned, Salami failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for his presence in the area.

According to him, the convict could also not give an account of where he got the yam flour, palm oil and other food items in his possession, all worth N1,000.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened section 390 (9) of Ogun’s Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006.
