    Seventy-four political parties have been deregistered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    This announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, on Thursday at a press conference in Abuja.

    He explained why the commission did so, citing a failure on the part of these parties to meet criteria set forth in the constitution during the elections.

    The number of political parties is now 18, this is according to Mahmood.
