Abdulrasheed Bawa Arrives Senate For Screening As EFCC Chairman

Abdulrasheed Bawa Arrives Senate For Screening As EFCC Chair

The newly-appointed Chairman-designate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has arrived at the Senate for screening.

The screening exercise is coming one week after President Muhammadu Buhari conveyed a letter to the Senate seeking Mr Bawa’s confirmation as the EFCC boss.

In the letter, President Buhari communicated his decision to appoint the 40-year-old. The appointment, he said, is in accordance with Paragraph 2(3) of Part1, CAP E1 of EFCC Act 2004.

According to Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, the screening of the new EFCC boss in plenary is in line with the Senate tradition.

The 40-year-old, if confirmed, will be the youngest person ever to serve as chairman of the nation’s foremost anti-corruption agency.

Bawa will also be the first core EFCC official and non-police officer to head the agency, a feat which has been hailed by a large majority of the EFCC staff.

The nominee’s appointment has, however, been met with criticism following allegations of corruption leveled against him by the previous EFCC leadership.

However, Bawa arrived at the Upper Chamber at 11:56 a.m. for the exercise which will have lawmakers ask him questions ranging from his past experiences to his plans for the new position he has been appointed for.

He was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Babajide Omoworare, and some of his family members.

Upon arrival, the Senate commenced screening exercise some minutes past noon and is currently being done in plenary with the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, presiding over the exercise.
