About 50 miners are believed to have been dead in a flooded gold mine in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo after a heavy downpour, this is according to a provincial governor.
The makeshift mine is situated in Kamituga, in the South Kivu province, with the Governor of South Kivu, Theo Ngwabidje Kasi, bemoaning “the tragic deaths of 50 people, most of them young”.
Although, the Mayor of Kamituga, Alexandre Bundya, said that the precise number of fatalities was yet to be determined.
He added that no bodies had been collected from the scene and that “19 families have come to look for their relatives”.
Addressing the issue, President of DR Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, said that the event "deeply saddened" him and has called on his co-public office holders to “take strong measures so that such tragedies are not repeated.”

Giving an account of what happened, a resident said, “It was not a collapse. It was because of the rains that the accident happened.
“Water went into the three tunnels. When people tried to get out, there was no way as the water was flowing strongly, with high pressure.”
