Acting Governor Of Northern Afghan Province Killed In Car Bombing

Acting Governor Of Northern Afghan Province Killed In Car Bo

The acting governor of Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan, Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, on Tuesday, was tragically killed in a car bombing attack in the provincial capital, Faizabad.

The assailant, driving a car loaded with explosives, deliberately targeted the vehicle carrying the acting governor, resulting in his immediate death.

The driver of the targeted vehicle also lost his life in the attack, while six others sustained injuries.

This incident marks the first known attack on a Taliban official in Afghanistan in recent weeks, raising concerns about the persistent threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the region.

Despite the improved security situation following the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, the ISIL affiliate remains a formidable threat in Afghanistan.

The Taliban's ascent to power saw the removal of the US-backed government and an end to the two-decade-long conflict.

However, the targeted attack on the acting governor highlights the continued risk posed by ISIL, which has a more sectarian agenda compared to the Taliban.
