Adamawa: Council Chairman Declares War Against Tree Felling

The Chairman of Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, (Dr) Muhammadu Usman Buji, has declared war against tree felling in the council area.

The Chairman ordered the ban on tree felling for firewood and charcoal as part of efforts to protect the forest resources across the 12 political wards of the LGA.

The chairman made the declaration on Friday morning during a security meeting at the council secretariat.

The meeting was attended by all heads of security agencies and five district heads in the LGA.

Nuruddeen Yusuf, the spokesperson to the chairman, made this known in a statement today.

According to Yusuf, the chairman said the charcoal production in the LGA was Illegal and highly prohibited.

He warned that defaulters would be arrested and prosecuted in the court of law.

"Mayo-Belwa is today ranked the highest producer of charcoal in commercial quantity which is not only consumed within the local government but is also exported...

"This is done at the detriment of the local government and the future generation. It is robbing the future generation of the benefit it will have from natural resources.

“Any vehicle caught carrying charcoal shall be impounded by the local government”, the Chairman said.

He further urged the District Heads to go back to their communities and sensitize the people to the order.
