Adamawa Rerun: Police Confirms Receipt Of INEC's Letter

IGP Usman Alkali Baba

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the receipt of a letter from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate irregularities in the just-concluded Adamawa rerun.

The police said the INEC's letter which was dated April 18, 2023, detailed the alleged impropriety of the actions by the Adamawa state's Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Barrister Hudu Yunusa Ari.

Ari had in the just-concluded governorship election in the state illegally announced Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani as the governor-elect in a dramatic way.

Ari's controversial announcement raised tension in the state while denting INEC's reputation.

This was made available in a statement by the Force spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Sunday.

According to Adejobi, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has also directed an investigation team to collaborate with INEC to expedite action on the contents of the letter.

The IGP further assured of commitment to get to the root of the matter while upholding democratic values.

"The Inspector-General of Police while expressing the commitment of the NPF to upholding democratic values, assures Nigerians and the international community, that the Police will leave no stone unturned in unraveling the remote causes of the unwholesome conduct of the REC as well as ensure that all persons fingered in the course of investigations are brought to book," Adejobi added.
