AFCON 2022: Super Eagles Soar Past Sudan To Qualify For Last

Super Eagles of Nigeria soared past Sudan to claim a spot in the next round of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2022 from their Group D Matchday 2 game as they defeated the Falcons of Jediane 3-1 at the Roumde Adija Stadium in Cameroon.

Nigeria had three different scorers on the sheet as Villarreal's winger Samuel Chukwueze opened the game early with a low ball past Ali Abu Eshrein at a close range.

Taiwo Awoniyi benefited from a mistake as the ball bounced off Sudan's defender to meet his head and head towards the goal to give him his first goal of the tournament and for Super Eagles.

The first half ended 2-0 as Nigeria look comfortable with Sudan giving little threat on the ball.

The second half was a resumption of hostilities as they extended the goal margin to three with a lovely run from Moses Simon with a shot to round off the goalkeeper.

With a three-goal margin and cancelling out any move from Sudan, Nigeria look to keep a clean sheet until a mistake by former Chelsea defender Ola Aina was ruled by VAR as a foul in the box.

After a review, the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty kick.

Walieldin Khedr stepped up to take it, with a drop of his shoulder -- he sent Maduka Okoye, the Super Eagles goalie the wrong way to give Sudan a consolation goal.

Nigeria remain top spot on Group D with two wins from two and four goals, conceding just one with six points.

Egypt will face Guinea-Bissau later on Saturday to see if they can join Nigeria in qualifying from the Group
