AFCON: NFF under fire for saying Super Eagles would win trophy for President Tinubu

AFCON: NFF under fire for saying Super Eagles would win trop

Nigeria's Super Eagles lost 2-1 to host Nation Ivory Coast as the AFCON 2023 competition ends on Sunday night in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The Nigeria Football Authority popularly known as the NFF before the match said that the Nigeria National team would win the AFCON for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The NFF President said in a news interview' concerning winning the tournament for Tinubu, “You heard what he said. He said, ‘Boys go there, believe in me.

‘You don’t have any problem and whatever issues you face, just believe in me. Go and do the job and you’ll see the result. That’s exactly what he told them, and you can see them doing the job.

“By the grace of God, I know he is going to reward them handsomely, which has never happened before in the history of Nigeria.

“We promised him that we are going to give him the trophy, and by the grace of God, we are going to do just that.”

The NFF boss called on all Nigerians to continue to support the team.

“We have just two matches to go and by the grace of God, we will continue to do what we are doing.

“We call on all Nigerians to pray for us because prayer is the key to whatever we are doing. So, we call on all Nigerians to continue to support us with prayers and by the grace of God,” he said.

But there have been reactions in the aftermath of the defeat of the team with many Nigerians questioning the meaning of such a statement.

It was reiterated by some Nigerians whether Tinubu has become more important than Nigeria or what could be the implications of such a statement.

Netizens are not pleased with NFF's statement on the Super Eagles winning the AFCON for President Tinubu as against the nation.

Following the outcome of the match, certain Nigerians have made key statements with some eggheads directing the comments made by the NFF as camouflage.

See some reactions below:

In a post via X, Mallam Jabir, writing via @Mallam_jabeer, said: “For Tinibu???? As in how???? I don’t understand ?”

@Al_Must3rph3r said: “That’s why I stopped supporting them? I’m not with Super Eagle”

@ML_Dumbulwa: “Tinubu or all the Nigerias”

@Manuel99998215: “Point of correction- They will win for Nigeria (Nigerians).”

@GbolahanShoks: “Winning it first for Nigeria before Tinubu? Hypocrates in highest order, looking for cheap publicity. Indirectly, he is praying for the team to lose.”

@ikemchrismount: “Make dem no win again.. we're ok we the stage wey dem dey.”

@DonaldAkawor: “What is Tinubu winning for Nigerians/super eagles players? Nothing but hardship and frustration, we are winning for ourselves not for Tinubu. You can see we are all struggling in Nigeria to attain ends meet without Gov’t.”

@muhammadkolo_: “Eagles Will Win 2023 AFCON Trophy For Nigerians. Now fixed”

@charlesPet7: “NFF should not tag Tinubu with Super eagles. Please don’t tag this Boys with Tinubu because it can even get them angry and play nonsense. The best headline should have been “Super Eagles will win the AFCON trophy for Nigerians who are angry because of Tinubu” NFF stay away abeg”

@okheime73: “Not for Nigetians but for Tinubu….hmmmm.”

@tonykosi2∅1∅53∅: “How? Not for Nigerian again? Is one man more Nigerian than others.”

@geulink: “If they win, it’s for Nigerians and not only Tinubu. They will make the money and get better offers from clubs and Nigerians will celebrate.”

@UtagherM: “That’s how they do. Let the Eagles be. Until they win. The AFCON, this isn’t necessary. This is another form of sycophancy.”

@speello63∅81: “They will win for Nigerians.”

@MorahBless2459o: “Win for Tinubu abii Nigerians? What will I not hear.”

The NFF would now come out to hide their face on the eve of Nigeria's defeat as they aim to use President Tinubu's involvement in the AFCON trophy as a sign of pretence.

Whereas they would want to also cover up for their huge shortcomings and flaws amid their roles as the Nigerian Football Authority in Nigeria.
