AFCON: South Africa beat DR Congo, clinch bronze in historic

Hugo Broos's South Africa side secured an impressive third-place victory over DR Congo as hostility beckoned on the field of play.

Both sides would fancy their chances coming into this game as they had lost to African giants Nigeria and Ivory Coast respectively in the semi-final.

Winning the third-place match would by a margin be a good achievement for both sides (SA and DR Congo )especially the South African side that achieved the feat for themselves.

Despite the early exchanges in the match, both sides could get a goal in the contest.

South Africa pressed on for the winning goal but it wasn't to be as it finished goalless after 90 minutes of football.

Extra time couldn't settle the tie but misses from DR Congo skipper (who plays as a defender for FC Porto) Chancel Mbemba increased the pressure of the match.

Whereas the star man for Bafana Bafana Teboho Mokoena missed his spot kick hit the underneath of the crossbar despite sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

However, with the shoot-out deadlocked at 5-5 following a Penalty miss from DR Congo Mechak Elia, South Africa's Siyanda Xulu scored to win it for his side 6-5.

It finished 6-5 in favour of South Africa as they defeated DR Congo on Penalties to win the AFCON 2023 third-place match.

Now all eyes would be on the big one which is the AFCON final match between two African heavyweights Nigeria and Ivory Coast on Sunday night.
