Afghan’s Herat Province Hit By Powerful Earthquake

The western province of Herat in Afghanistan has experienced yet another devastating earthquake, further compounding the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Herat province, already grappling with the aftermath of a powerful earthquake on October 8, was struck by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake on Sunday, marking the third quake in a short period.

A significant aftershock with a magnitude of 5.5 followed shortly thereafter, intensifying the crisis. The full extent of the impact is yet to be determined, but initial reports suggest injuries and casualties.

Herat's residents, still recovering from the earlier quakes, fear their homes crumbling and have resorted to sleeping outdoors.

The situation worsened with dust storms, damaging the tents where survivors sought shelter.

AFP news agency quoted Abdul Qadeem Mohammadi, head doctor at Herat Regional Hospital, as saying that “so far 93 injured and one dead have been registered”.
