On Tuesday, gunmen raided the Ilejemeje local government area secretariat in Ẹda-Oniyọ, Ekiti State, sparking panic and mayhem among personnel.

The assaults disrupted routine operations and prompted staff to abandon the building for safety.

The hoodlums, who were claimed to have come from the Obbo-Ayegunle village in adjacent Kwara State, aggressively invaded the secretariat, firing numerous bullets, forcing personnel to flee in all directions, running for their lives, and one of them was hurt in the subsequent chaos.

The hoodlums allegedly vandalised the Secretariat building and other council property.

Though the motive of the attack is still unknown at the time of writing, it has been credibly reported that the two villages have been locked in a conflict for some time due to land issues.

During the onslaught, which lasted several hours, one victim was alleged to have incurred significant injuries and was taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Iye-Ekiti for immediate medical assistance.

According to sources, the hoodlums attacked the Secretariat at about 10 a.m., loaded with hazardous weapons like guns, charms, and cutlasses.

Speaking about the incident, the Eleda of the Eda Oniyo community, Oba Awodipo Awolola, stated that the hoodlums had attacked several of the community's members with charm on their farmlands in a matter of days, causing worry and anxiety in the community.

The traditional ruler, who regretted the lack of police presence in the region, stated that security agencies should deploy additional officers to the village to prevent further violations of law and order.

Similarly, the Chairman of Ilejemaje Local Government, Mr Alaba Dada, stated that the alleged hoodlums came from the Obbo-Ayegunle village in Kwara State.

He blamed the attacks on unresolved property issues between the two groups, even though security agents had been deployed to the area to avoid a reparaiser attack.

He stated that the Ekiti and Kwara State governments must meet to resolve the land issue in the interest of maintaining peace and harmony.
