Nigeria's First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has deactivated her Twitter account following the suspension of the micro-blogging platform by her husband on Friday.

“I will be deactivating my Twitter account for now. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she wrote before deactivating her account.

The action of the first came after the proclamation by the Federal Government that it was suspending the activities of the social media platform in the country.

The Federal Government's suspension of the micro-blogging platform came after a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari, perceived to be offensive by many, was massively reported and was subsequently deleted by the global microblogging website.

Twitter had been one of the main avenues used by the President and his wife to disseminate both official and social messages to Nigerians. After Buhari was sworn in, May 29, 2015, he had expressed gratitude to social media campaigners who helped his cause, using Twitter and other social media platforms.

Meanwhile, there are reports according to CNN that any Nigerian found using Twitter will be arrested and prosecuted

The Federal Government had announced the indefinite suspension of Twitter's operations in Nigeria on Friday.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made the announcement in a press release published on the verified Twitter page of the Ministry of Information and Culture.

The suspension came after the Minister expressed suspicion of the role of Twitter in Nigeria.
