Alcaraz Records Winning Start At Roland Garros

World number one Carlos Alcaraz started his campaign at this year's French Open with an easy win against Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli on Monday evening.

The Spaniard won 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to hurriedly put behind his early defeat at the Italian Open and begin his quest for a second Grand Slam title.

Alcaraz raced through the opening set and flattened Cobolli in the second set before the Italain won the first game of set three and jumped out to a 2-1 lead.

But Cobolli couldn't keep up with the tempo of the tie and started making mistakes which Alcaraz capitalised on to seal victory.

“I felt I couldn’t lose a game. I thought that I was able to win easier than I did, but a match can turn around in each game.

"But at the start of the match, I felt invincible,” said Alcaraz, who won the claycourt tournaments in Barcelona and Madrid.

The 20-year-old will next play Japan’s Taro Daniel who eased past Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-0 6-2 6-4.

“I know that Taro is having a great year,” Alcaraz said of his opponent, who stunned last year’s Roland Garros runner-up Casper Ruud en route to the quarterfinals in Mexico earlier this season.

“He’s playing great. He has won great matches against great players. And of course he won easy against O’Connell...

"I know the level of Taro, so it’s going to be a really tough second round, really tough match.”
