ALERT: Nigerians Must Press For The Passage Of These 7 Bills

There are hundreds of bills that pass through the National Assembly. Keeping up with these bills can be very tedious for Nigerians, yet it is important to follow up and press for the actualisation of the good ones and the rejection of the bad ones. Following up on the bills is also a way to follow up with elected legislators and evaluate their impact. In this article, Bolanle Akinlade underlines seven bills that Nigerians should really be interested in. 



These bills stand out among many, for their peculiarity to health, security, and social welfare. These bills are summarised in the details below:

Project Continuity Bill, (2019): This bill was sponsored by Senator Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North Senatorial District, under the All Progressives Congress. It should be noted that this bill has passed through the National Assembly under different administrations and it is still not passed into law.

The bill seeks to ensure that no tier of government has any abandoned project in any part of Nigeria. If this bill eventually passes into law in the 9th assembly, the culture of project abandonment as a result of a change in administration will become history in Nigeria. Taxpayers would in turn be able to reap the benefits of their tax money. The bill is still on first reading.

Students Loan (Access to Higher Education) Bill, (2019): This bill was sponsored by Senator Abdullahi Abubakar Yahaya, representing Kebbi North Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress party.

This bill seeks to provide access to higher education for Nigerians through Interest-free loans from Nigerian Education Banks which are to be established with a view to providing education for all Nigerians and for related matters. This bill is also still on first reading at the senate.

Whistle Blower and Witness Protection bill, (2019): This bill was sponsored by the Late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu who represented Imo North senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate under the All Progressives Congress (APC) Party.

This bill seeks to provide the manner in which individuals may in the interest of the public disclose information that relates to unlawful or other illegal conduct or corrupt practices of others and to provide for the protection against victimization of such persons.

Regardless of the death of the sponsor, it is hoped that the bill will eventually be passed into law even though the bill has been on first reading since 2019.

Social Assistance Bill, (2019): This bill was sponsored by Senator Chimaroke Nnamani representing Enugu East Senatorial District, under the Peoples Democratic Party.

The bill seeks a law to provide assistance to expectant mothers and young persons, to provide for the process of such assistance, and to establish the Nigerian Social Assistance Agency. The bill has only just passed the first reading.

The Physically Challenged (Empowerment) Bill, (2019):  This bill was transmitted from the House of Representatives and sponsored by Senator Abdullahi Abubakar Yahaya representing Kebbi North Senatorial District, under the All Progressives Congress (APC) party.

This bill seeks to provide a law that 20 percent of jobs available in all Federal Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and Companies be distributed among the physically challenged persons in Nigeria and for other related matters. The bill passed the first Reading in 2019

Older Persons (Rights and Privileges) Bill, (2019): This bill was sponsored by Senator Onyewuchi Ezenna Francis, representing Imo East senatorial district in the 9th assembly under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The bill seeks to provide certain rights and privileges for older persons, in order to ensure health, economic reliefs, and protection of their social and civic rights. The Older Persons Right Bill is currently awaiting committee report.

Care and Protection of Child Parents Bill, (2019): Sponsored by Senator Uba Sani, representing Kaduna Central senatorial district under the All Progressives Congress party.

The bill seeks to provide the modalities of care and protection to be given to underaged parents. The bill is on First Reading.
